That Land Beyond the Waves

In 1914 376 passengers of South Asian descent landed on BC shores in the hopes of building new lives. They came abiding the restrictive immigration policies at that time. For two months these hopeful immigrants were forced to stay on their ship, the Komagata Maru, during which they were denied their basic rights and provisions. Ultimately only a handful of returning migrants were allowed to come shore, while the rest were forced to return only to be shot at by British Indian troops at Budge Budge, Calcutta. Many of these men were killed, injured, or imprisoned, while others were forced into exile.

Matinee Performance, Sunday, Nov 2 at 2 pm. Doors open at 1:30 pm.

Ongoing until Dec 2014 an exhibition titled Challenge and Denial: Komagata Maru 100 Years Later 1914-2014 at the Sikh Heritage Museum located in the National Historic Site, Gur Sikh Temple.
