History Department Visiting Scholar Talk: “Mother of the Equal Rights Amendment: How Martha Griffiths Made History”
In 1970, Martha W. Griffiths, allied with feminists inside and outside Congress, moved the Equal Rights
Amendment to the top of the US political agenda as away to remove sex discrimination in law. She then
maneuvered it through Congress, achieving what had not been done in the half-century since the ERA was first proposed. In this talk, Dr. Jennifer Frost will explain how Griffiths and her allies made history and why it matters today.
