Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Location: : Sikh Heritage Museum
The SASI is pleased to invite you to a forum on ‘Hockey, Racism and Memory-Making’ on Tuesday, May 28th from 10-12pm at the Sikh Heritage Museum, a National Historic Site and Gur Sikh Temple, followed with langar (vegetarian communal meal) at the Khalsa Diwan Society gurdwara at 12pm.
Dr. Courtney Szto (Queens University) will discuss the right to public memory as an important marker of citizenship that speaks to human dignity and identity as part of a functioning democratic society. Modern sports halls of fame and museums have carried on this tradition by immortalizing specific (and exclusive) past accomplishments, while concurrently, relegating others to oblivion. Through a more inclusive re-telling of Canada’s hockey history she argues for a form of intersectional justice.
Dr. Szto’s research is the inspiration behind the SASI curated exhibit, ‘We Are Hockey.’ Bhupinder Singh Hundal (Producer, CBC) will also be speaking about the role of media and diversifying.
All are invited to attend. To rsvp please email sasi@ufv.ca.
