Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Location: : Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
Enjoy the scenic trails and wetlands of the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve. Listen and learn about the unique relationship between the Stó:lō, “the People of the River”, and their land and environment through the narratives provided by Sonny McHalsie (whose Stó:lō name is Si:yemiya) who has studied Halq’eméylem Place Names for over 30 years. Connecting to the land and the stories it holds is a key part of reclaiming and reviving the culture of the Stó:lō people.
Si:yemiya is the cultural advisor at the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre and is also an adjunct professor of history at UFV who has been co-teaching the Indigenous Maps, Films, Rights and Land Claims certificate program for several years. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria in recognition of his important work preserving the stories and culture of his people.
