We welcome back to UFV our 2015 honorary doctorate recipient Dr. Catherine Hickson
Dr. Catherine Hickson’s life began in Alberta — a far cry from towering peaks, floating icebergs, and exploding volcanoes. If you asked, she would be the first to admit her life has evolved far differently than she envisioned. In fact, she didn’t really “follow her dreams”, they followed her! A curious mind and an interest in the natural world provided twists and turns that evolved into an adventurous life.
An eyewitness to the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens, this devastating, almost instantaneous destruction of a vast area focused Hickson’s attention on understanding the destructive forces of volcanoes. Since then, her work has taken her from the Arctic sea to the polar opposite; the frozen continent of Antarctica. From the extreme altitude and aridness of the Andes to the barren slopes of erupting volcanoes. An underlying theme in her studies has been the investigation of how the massive forces of moving tectonic plates have created unique environments.
Come join Dr. Hickson in this exploration of the destructive regions of our planet and the earth forces that create such unique environments.
