From India to Whitehorse, George Peary is “Changing Lives and Building Community”

UFV President Mark Evered is pleased to welcome guest speaker and UFV honorary degree recipient Dr. George Peary.

From India to Whitehorse, Dr. Peary is well-known as a teacher and a community leader. A former Abbotsford mayor, councilor, and school principal, he has always been active in his community – no matter the geographic location – and innovative in his approach to education. In his early years he taught in Whitehorse, Yukon before moving to Abbotsford and eventually earning the role of vice-principal at Abbotsford Senior Secondary, then principal at Maple Ridge Secondary, W.J.Mouat Secondary, Abbotsford Junior Secondary and Yale Secondary.

In partnership with UFV, Peary created the Career Technical Centre, the first school in Canada where secondary teachers and university instructors worked side-by-side, collaborating and teaching the same students. This revolutionary concept of a seamless transition from high school to post-secondary education has since been adopted throughout the province, and enables students to begin post-secondary programs leading to employment credentials while still in high school.

Following his retirement from the public system, Peary taught at UFV as a sessional Business instructor and then taught two terms at UFV’s campus in Chandigarh, India.

Peary is now principal of Dasmesh Punjabi School in Abbotsford. And still finds time to contribute as a community volunteer most recently at the BC Summer Games in Abbotsford.

Peary’s global perspective on public service and education will make for an entertaining lecture on how education can change lives and build communities.

This is a free lecture open, to UFV faculty, staff, students and to the community.
