Join us for one last chance this term to learn about and engage with the impressive scholarly work of UFV faculty in a relaxed, welcoming (and catered) environment!

1) Jill Bain, Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Studies in the Visual Arts Department at UFV. Her research focuses on the visual culture of Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Italy.

“Art and Religion in Medieval Italy: The Benedictine Rule and the Painted Program of the Abbey of Pomposa”

Located on the Adriatic coast of Italy, not far from Ravenna, the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria di Pomposa boasts an impressive array of Trecento (14th century) wall paintings. What is perhaps surprising is that these extensive painting cycles, which cover the walls of the church, chapter house, and refectory, were completed during a period of decline in the abbey’s fortunes. Through an examination of the imagery of the central apse of the church, I will propose that these paintings strove to create a sense of historical continuity, presence, and belonging by asserting a particularly Benedictine identity.

Meetings of the Scholarly Sharing Initiative are a place where faculty, students, and interested others can gather over lunch and coffee to share, discuss, present, and receive feedback on their research and scholarly work. The initiative is supported by the UFV Office of Research Services and the College of Arts.
