Marcella LaFever, Communication Department – The fourth domain: Indigenizing curricular outcomes through use of the Medicine Wheel in course design Thank you to former UFV student Charlene Leon for inspiring me to investigate the use of the place of the Medicine Wheel in the scholarship of teaching and learning. In this session I present a four domain model meant to assist curriculum designers to develop course outcome statements that honour learning needs across the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. In presenting this model I encourage session participants to offer examples from their own courses and disciplines as to how they might change and/or add outcomes where they see possible gaps.
Shurli Makmillen, English Department and Michelle Riedlinger, Communications Department – Moving beyond “Can I use I?” in academic writing: Self-reference in Indigenous scholarship and implications for pedagogy This project was inspired by our involvement in teaching academic writing to Indigenous undergraduate students at UFV. We conducted textual analyses of peer-reviewed publications written by Indigenous scholars in both Aotearoa New Zealand and in B.C. We found the use of “we” significantly elevated in single-authored texts by Maori and Pacific Islander scholars, as well as an elevated use of verbs that signify affect and storytelling. BC Indigenous scholars also made strategic choices about who to call on to act on the research findings, and they often “softened” the imperatives through citation practices and word choices. We hope to generate discussion about the implications of these findings for academic writing instruction.
