Join Victoria Surtees, Teaching and Learning Specialist, Internationalization, in her Chat-I.
This online session will be on Building on IELTS experience, and we welcome special guests, Dr. Ismaeil Fazel, and UFV students.
Session overview:
Have you ever wondered how students’ English is evaluated prior to their entry at UFV?
Dr. Fazel will share his wealth of knowledge about the IELTS, what it tests (and doesn’t), and what to expect from students who have taken the exam. Students will also share their experiences preparing from and taking the IELTS – from the studying and strategies that got them through (or didn’t!) to the ways that the content influenced their thinking about writing and interacting on Canadian campuses. Together, we will consider how we as instructors and service providers can provide resources that meet them where they are and build on their experiences. We will also consider how English testing is embedded within a larger colonial system.
This session builds competencies around: understanding international student experiences, countering deficit narratives, and providing academic support.
Guests: Dr. Ismaeil Fazel, Assessment Specialist and instructor at UBC’s Vantage College and UFV students with experiences of IELTS will share their expertise with us!
