Join us to view the Creating an Online Summer Bridge Program:  Designing, Implementing and Assessing webinar through Innovative Educators.  This is part 2 of the Create, Implement & Deliver Summer Bridge Programs Web Series.

Summer Bridge programs are considered a best practice in higher education and have been developed in many colleges and universities across the country. The goal of these courses and programs is to help a variety of student populations have a successful transition during the first-year. A perennial issue in designing summer bridge programs is determining the curriculum of content and facing the dilemma of “fitting it all in.” How do institutions determine what content is essential as students make the transition to college? How do campuses individualize the curricula and programs to meet the needs of each campus and their diverse student populations? How do we support faculty to develop expertise?

Utilizing e-learning pedagogy offers practical solutions to patterned issues that summer bridge programs typically face. This session examines the development of an online course designed to enhance the transition into higher education and enables participants to consider a framework for their course design. Practical strategies for incorporating online resources into an e-learning student success course will be highlighted.

This session explores the process of developing and creating an online summer bridge course to assist students with the transition into the higher education experience. Participants will discover the challenges and rewards of designing a dynamic online course from the initial idea phase through the implementation and assessment stages.


  • Identify campus collaborators and key stakeholders
  • Determine key student transition components to be included in the summer bridge online course
  • Discover pre-existing materials to incorporate into the student success online course
  • Define tools that can be utilized to create online learning modules
  • Develop a plan for implementation
  • Examine student self-report data collected from the online course
