DESCRIPTION:*Please note the updated location. \n\nWhere do we – our com
 munity\, our country\, and our world – stand on the project of human rig
 hts? How can we ensure that the aspiration of a universal human rights sys
 tem is realized? What can and must we as individuals\, in our everyday liv
 es\, do to promote not only our human rights\, but those of others – tho
 se with whom we share space but also strangers half a world away?\n\nJoin 
 us this October 9 for a timely conversation with 2025 CBC Massey Lecturer 
 Alex Neve and UFV Assistant Professor Mark Kersten on these and other them
 es. At a time when optimism and hope is much needed but often in short sup
 ply\, Alex will provide insights and lessons from his years on the front l
 ines of human rights advocacy. The conversation will explore critical huma
 n rights questions and challenges in the region\, across Canada\, and the 
 world to explore the responsibility we all have to do our part to universa
 lize our rights and the rights others. And the difference we can make when
  we do so.\n\n"Alex Neve" believes in a world in which the human rights of
  all people are protected. He is presently a visiting and adjunct professo
 r in international human rights law with the Faculties of Law and Social S
 ciences at the University of Ottawa and Dalhousie University\, and a Senio
 r Fellow with the University of Ottawa’s Graduate School of Public and I
 nternational Affairs. He served as Secretary General of Amnesty Internatio
 nal Canada’s English Branch from 2000 - 2020. In that role he led and to
 ok part in over forty human rights research and advocacy delegations throu
 ghout Africa\, Asia\, Latin America\, Guantánamo Bay and\, closer to home
 \, First Nations communities in Canada. Alex is a lawyer\, with an LLB fro
 m Dalhousie University and a Master’s Degree in International Human Righ
 ts Law from the University of Essex. He has served as a member of the Immi
 gration and Refugee Board\, taught at Osgoode Hall Law School\, been affil
 iated with York University's Centre for Refugee Studies\, and worked as a 
 refugee lawyer in private practice and in a community legal aid clinic.\n\
 nAlex is the Chair of Canadian Leadership for Nuclear Disarmament and the 
 Canadian Coalition on Human Rights in China\, serves on the Board of Direc
 tors of the Centre for Law and Democracy\, is a Fellow with the Atlantic H
 uman Rights Centre and is a Principal Researcher with the University of Ot
 tawa’s Centre for International Policy Studies. Alex has been named an O
 fficer of the Order of Canada and served as a Trudeau Foundation Mentor. H
 e is a recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He has rec
 eived honorary Doctorate of Laws degrees from St. Thomas University\, the 
 University of Waterloo and the University of New Brunswick. Alex is the 20
 25 CBC Massey Lecturer\, addressing the theme of Universal: Renewing Human
