SUMMARY:Can I Get a Mortgage Please? Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Can I Get a Mortgage Please? Closing Reception\nAllie Risley\,
UFV School of Creative Arts BFA alumni\nClosing reception: Tuesday\, Febru
 ary 24\, 3:00-4:00 pm\n\nOn View: February 4-27\, 2026\n\n\n\nCan I Get a
Mortgage Please? presents an embodied mix of mediums by Allie Risley that
reflects on contemporary issues of living and examines how we are meant to
find ourselves living today. Through encaustic and sculptural works\, thi
s exhibition confronts the urgency of housing affordability within our com
munities and the anxieties that lay within finding a place to exist.\n\nAl
lie Risley is a BFA alumni (2021) in the School of Creative Arts (SoCA) at
the University of the Fraser Valley. Risley looks at this subject through
a lens of emotional memory\, finding connection with colour and textures
that are felt and seen throughout the Fraser Valley. These works encourage
viewers to feel both the physical and emotional changes that are present
when we struggle to live within the expectations of an ever changing and d
emanding societal landscape\, shaped by the pressures to keep up with the
housing market and rapid development of the Fraser Valley.\n\nEncaustics h
ave been a part of Risley’s medium for many years\; the use of bee’s w
ax allows the flow state of paint to become solid within its own fluid mov
ement\, demonstrating a preservation of time and memory within it. The wax
behaves much like a memory\, solidifying a moment in time that will never
exist quite the same\, but preserved\, nonetheless. Seeing the natural la
ndscape and areas of development\, alongside the mass gentrification of ar
eas can leave us feeling like a piece is lost - but we never really forget
how things look before they change. How are we expected to live? How can
we afford it?\n\nThe exhibition opens on February 4th at the S’eliyemeta
xwtexw Art Gallery\, located on the UFV Abbotsford Campus\, and runs throu
gh until February 27th.\n\nA closing reception will be held on Tuesday\, F
ebruary 24\, from 3:00-4:00 pm in the gallery. All are welcome to attend a
 nd admission is free.\n\nInstagram: @ai.risley\n\nFor more information\, c
