SUMMARY:Candlelight Vigil: National Day of Awareness and Action on Violence
  Against Women
DESCRIPTION:\nCandlelight Vigil: National Day of Awareness and Action on Vi
olence Against Women\nOn December 6\, 1989\, 14 women lost their lives at
École Polytechnique de Montreal because they were women studying engineer
ing. This act of violent misogyny led Parliament to designate December 6 a
s the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. As
we continue to remember these women 35 years later\, this day also brings
awareness to the continuing occurrence of violence against women in our s
 ociety.\n\nPlease join us at UFV’s annual vigil:\n\nFriday\, December 5\
 , 2025\n12:00 noon\nAbbotsford Campus\nAlumni Hall\n\nIf you have any ques
tions regarding the vigil\, please contact Christina Forcier at christina.
forcier@ufv.ca.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nIt has been over 30 years since the murder o
f 14 young women at Polytechnique Montréal (December 6\, 1989). This act
of violent misogyny shook our country and led Parliament to designate Dece
mber 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against W
 omen.\n\nOn December 6\, we remember:\n\n Geneviève Bergeron\n Hélène
  Colgan\n Nathalie Croteau\n Barbara Daigneault\n Anne-Marie Edward\n
 Maud Haviernick\n Maryse Laganière\n Maryse Leclair\n Anne-Marie Lemay
 \n Sonia Pelletier\n Michèle Richard\n Annie St-Arneault\n Annie Turc
otte\n Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz\n\nAs we mourn their loss and remember
their lives\, we reaffirm our commitment to fight the hatred that led to
this tragedy\, and the misogyny that still exists today. In Canada and aro
und the world\, women\, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals face unacceptable
violence and discrimination. Gender-based violence in Canada has been magn
ified and amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been reports from
police services\, shelters\, and local organization of an increase in cal
ls related to gender-based violence across Canada during the pandemic.\n\n
The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is ab
out remembering those who have experienced gender-based violence and those
who we have lost to it. It is also a time to take action. Achieving a Can
ada free from gender-based violence requires everyone living in this count
ry to educate themselves and their families and communities on gender-base
d violence\, centre the voices of survivors in our actions and speak up ag
 ainst harmful behaviours.
