From Evidence to Action”: Symposium on Canada’s Response to Non-Fatal Strangulation
Please join us May 13 -15 for the inaugural symposium on strangulation prevention and response in Canada!
MAY 13TH -15TH at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, BC (remote participation is also available)
Thanks to funding provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Department of Justice Canada’s Victims Fund, the inaugural Canadian strangulation symposium will be held at UFV in Abbotsford, British Columbia May 13-15 during Victims and Survivors of Crime Week 2026.
– May 13th pre-symposium strangulation 101 workshop add-on (in-person & virtual options)
– May 14th and 15th symposium (in-person & virtual options)
– May 14th in-person networking reception (free but advance registration required due to space limitations)
The symposium will feature keynote presentations and skill-building workshops about strangulation research, policy, and practice in Canada, including: supporting survivors who have experienced strangulation and brain injury; criminal justice system responses to strangulation as a form of abuse; strangulation trends in police, forensic nursing, and healthcare samples; strangulation case law; and “consensual” sexual strangulation. The symposium is targeted towards practitioners, service providers, policymakers, and researchers in Canada.
