SUMMARY:Human-centered AI in Sustainable Energy Optimization for Smart Home
s and Buildings (Hosted by EFCIE)
DESCRIPTION:\nHuman-centered AI in Sustainable Energy Optimization for Smar
t Homes and Buildings (Hosted by EFCIE)\nIn order to reduce carbon emissio
ns and address environmental concerns due to the rapid increase in energy
demand\, there is a significant need to improve the integration of energy
monitoring and management systems in homes and buildings. More specific to
residential homes\, the emergence of affordable solutions for smart light
ing\, smart thermostat and smart speakers (e.g.\, Alexa\, Google Assist) h
ave resulted in significant growth in the smart home automation industry.
However\, despite all the advancements in this field\, there are gaps in t
he design of affordable sustainable solutions for energy monitoring and op
timization using mix and match smart devices.\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Shaban
i will explain how his research team has developed a solution using Artifi
cial Intelligence (AI) that could provide a data-driven strategy for energ
y optimization in a smart home. More specifically\, he will explain the im
portance of early market data collection and its role in the design of a h
 uman-centered AI solution in product development.\nRegister today!\n\n\nDr
. Amir Shabani\n\nAssistant Professor (Computer Information Systems) &amp\
; Faculty Associate (EFCIE)\n\nDr. Amir Shabani is directing the Interacti
ve Intelligent Systems and Computing research team at UFV. His current pro
jects include deep learning for affective computing with social companion
robots\, personalized machine learning in physiotherapy rehabilitation\, i
ndoor positioning and contact tracing\, augmented collaborative workspaces
\, and human-centered automation for smart spaces. Prior to joining UFV\,
Dr. Shabani was an NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges (IRCC) for
Smart Connected Buildings. Between 2012-2019\, he secured over $1M in fun
ding from NSERC\, Ontario Center of Excellence\, MITACS\, FedDev and priva
te companies. Amir holds a PhD in Machine Learning and Computer Vision fro
m the University of Waterloo. Prior to his PhD\, Amir worked on several mu
lti-million dollar projects with automation companies from Europe and Asia
. He is an active consultant and welcomes industry collaboration and appli
ed R&amp\;D projects in Computing and Mechatronics &amp\; Electronics Engi
 neering (P.Eng)
