SUMMARY:Scholarly Sharing Initiative
DESCRIPTION:\nScholarly Sharing Initiative\nA series of monthly gatherings
where members of the UFV community discuss their current scholarly work\nO
 ct 25\, 2017\n\nFrom 1:15 - 2:45 pm in F125. Light lunch served - All welc
ome!\n\nWenona Hall and Adrienne Chan—Indigenous Youth and Land-based Re
siliency\n\nIn our work with Seabird Island\, which is ongoing\, a Guiding
  Group (Elders\, youth\, knowledge holders\, Band workers\, research team
members) charts the program of youth activities. Weekly activities are pla
nned that expose youth to traditional teachings/activities as well as land
stewardship responsibilities that are required for the continued existenc
e of the Nation. Youth are also examining their youth culture and identify
ing their own goals to create spaces for belonging and contributing. Youth
are taking pictures of themselves and their surrounding as they engage in
the process of discovering who they are as youth\, Indigenous youth\, Sea
bird youth. This fall\, the youth will assemble these pictures into a digi
tal story that describes Who they are\, which will be shared with family a
nd community as a platform for further discussion and work. As youth conne
ct with their community and the land\, they connect with\, and participate
in the creation of\, their future. Our work is grounded in Indigenous met
 hodologies.\n\nCindy Jardine—Partnering with Indigenous Youth as Co-Rese
archers\n\nInvolving youth directly in research ensures true participation
in the investigation of health issues that affect them and others in thei
r communities\, and provides them with a ‘voice’ in both identifying r
elevant issues and determining appropriate courses of action. Viewing heal
th issues through their children’s eyes is seen by the communities as a
powerful and effective means of creating awareness of health issues\, and
initiating actions for health and cultural promotion. The youth co-researc
hers also develop research and leadership skills\, a more critical underst
anding of health challenges facing their community and a sense of ownershi
p of the research.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSponsored by and with the generous suppor
t of UFV Office of Research &amp\; UFV College of Arts\n\nFor more informa
 tion contact Melissa.Walter@ufv.ca or Alex.Wetmore@ufv.ca
