SUMMARY:Scholarly Sharing Initiative
DESCRIPTION:\nScholarly Sharing Initiative\nYou are warmly invited to atten
d the Scholarly Sharing Initiative's final presentations for the 2017/18 a
cademic year\, where our speakers will discuss visual art\, music\, religi
on\, European history and affect. Join us for one last chance this term to
learn about and engage with the impressive scholarly work of UFV faculty
 in a relaxed\, welcoming (and catered) environment!\n\nWednesday\, March 2
 8\n1:15-2:45 pm\nAbby U-House (SASI)\n\nCoffee and lunch provided!\n\n1) J
ill Bain\, Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Studies in the Vi
sual Arts Department at UFV. Her research focuses on the visual culture of
Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Italy.\n\n"Art and Religion in Mediev
al Italy: The Benedictine Rule and the Painted Program of the Abbey of Pom
posa"\n\nLocated on the Adriatic coast of Italy\, not far from Ravenna\, t
he Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria di Pomposa boasts an impressive array
of Trecento (14th century) wall paintings. What is perhaps surprising is t
hat these extensive painting cycles\, which cover the walls of the church\
, chapter house\, and refectory\, were completed during a period of declin
e in the abbey's fortunes. Through an examination of the imagery of the ce
ntral apse of the church\, I will propose that these paintings strove to c
reate a sense of historical continuity\, presence\, and belonging by asser
ting a particularly Benedictine identity.\n\n--\n\n1) John Pitcher\, Assoc
iate Professor of English at UFV.\n\n"Opera and Affect"\n\nMeetings of the
Scholarly Sharing Initiative are a place where faculty\, students\, and i
nterested others can gather over lunch and coffee to share\, discuss\, pre
sent\, and receive feedback on their research and scholarly work. The init
iative is supported by the UFV Office of Research Services and the College
  of Arts.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nAlex Wetmore\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Profess
