Dates: June 15 – July 13, 2020
Trainers: Michelle Johnson, Ken Harmel, Leonne Beebe, and Dugg Steary
Location : online

The UFV-FLO is a four-week online course. It launches and ends with a one-hour synchronous session but the content within the 4 weeks is delivered asynchronously and paced in four one-week modules.

  • Week One is Building Online Community
  • Week Two is Adult Learners Online
  • Week Three is Collaboration and Teamwork
  • Week Four is Reflective Practice

Participants each get a chance to practice co-facilitating (in small groups) a learning activity in Week Two, Three, an Four (Week One is modeled by the FLO facilitator). Participation is essential to the success of the other participants in the course. The commitment to this course is about 6-7 hours each week with possibly a little more time commitment during facilitation week. The time commitment is intended to be 24-30 hours total – spanned over 4 weeks.

The UFV-FLO is meant to help enhance the skills needed to confidently and effectively facilitate learning online in Blackboard Learn. This course is participant-driven and builds on the fundamental principles of the face-to-face Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW). These principles include:

  • participatory and learner-centred — participants form a learning community and support each other’s learning
  • a safe, respectful learning environment — you will be encouraged to take risks, be creative, and learn from your mistakes
  • feedback-rich — you will be encouraged to give and receive feedback with fellow participants
  • reflective practice — you will analyze and critically reflect on the art of facilitation and your facilitation skills
  • relevant and meaningful — you will explore the future application and transferability of your learning in this course

In the UFV-FLO course, you will:

  • facilitate, or co-facilitate, a learning activity on a pre-assigned topic with given content;
  • integrate adult and online learning theories and principles into activities you facilitate;
  • experiment with a variety of learning-facilitation techniques and strategies;
  • use the UFV learning management system (LMS), Blackboard Learn and a variety of the available tools as you facilitate
  • give and receive constructive feedback;
  • work in online teams;
  • Reflect on, and plan how to apply, what you have learned to other courses and contexts.
