Over the past few months we are sure you have used more than one online meeting tool, but hopefully less than a dozen. You have probably heard of many new educational\u00a0tools that could add value to your online course, or complicate it. An effective course does not need to be complex –\u00a0 it’s often clear and simple. However, keeping a course simple can be a challenge – what do you include and what do you leave out? How do students learn these concepts well when online? A reminder that Teaching and Learning is here to help you. Our virtual doors are always open. We’d love to see you and chat about online design, pedagogy and anything in between. You are not alone. We are here to assist you and your students.<\/em><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Teaching and Learning developed the <\/em>Online Course Development Guidelines<\/strong><\/a><\/em>\u00a0which were reviewed, revised and endorsed by the Teaching and Learning Advisory Council, the Senate Teaching and Learning Committee and the Senior Academic Leadership Team. These guidelines outline suggestions for good learning experiences in the online environment. UFV encourages faculty to use the guidelines to support the development of their online courses. If you have any questions or require assistance, don\u2019t hesitate to contact <\/em>askTLC@ufv.ca<\/strong><\/a><\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\n

MicroCourses- Online Learning Fundamentals<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Teaching and Learning Centre is offering an ongoing MicroCourse series of workshops (essential Blackboard tools for online courses),\u00a0with synchronous dates and times scheduled\u00a0weekly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The primary objective of these MicroCourses is the pedagogy behind the tools and how they can be used to:
\n*achieve learning objectives
\n*promote student engagement
\n*collaborate among peers and instructors
\n*creative easy-to-navigate course design
\n*assess student learning
\n*offer support to students
\n*create an online learning community<\/p>\n

Each course consists of:
\n*a one-hour scheduled synchronous session
\n*an additional Blackboard course
\n*a one-hour asynchronous activity\/reading\/resource<\/p>\n

\nMicroCourse 8 – Managing your Online Course, <\/strong>has just been added to the schedule.<\/p>\n

On August 4th, there are 150 days left in 2017 \u2013 the year of Canada\u2019s 150th birthday. There have been robust discussions this year around reconciliation and we would like to contribute to the conversation. Together, we have written 150 Acts of Reconciliation for the last 150 days of 2017. Many of these are small, everyday acts that average Canadians can undertake, but others are more provocative that encourage people to think about Indigenous-settler relationships in new ways.
