Palestinian Christian Author to Speak at UFV
Fraser Valley residents have a rare opportunity to hear Reverend Naim Ateek, a Palestinian Christian author and long-time advocate for justice and reconciliation in the Holy Land, on April 23 at the Abbotsford campus of the University of the Fraser Valley. The event, which is one stop on a nation-wide speaking tour, begins at 7:00 p.m. in Room B101. Admission is free and open to the public. The presentation is sponsored by the UFV student group Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) and Canadian Friends of Sabeel.
“We’re pleased to sponsor this event,” said Kapil Sharma, president of SPHR–UFV. “The strident rhetoric that often characterizes debate of the Palestine – Israel conflict often drowns out the voices of the Palestinian Christians. Reverend Ateek is one of those preeminent voices, and he has devoted much of his life to seeking a just peace.”
Reverend Ateek’s life has been framed by the conflict in Israel and Palestine. In 1948, Israeli forces expelled his family from their village. He grew up in Nazareth, and in 1967 he was ordained a priest in the Anglican Communion. In 1991 he co-founded Sabeel, the Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem. Reverend Ateek has written several books including the recently released A Palestinian Theology of Liberation: The Bible, Justice, and the Palestine–Israel Conflict.
