What’s in a Place Name? A Gathering of Languages, Lands, and Learnings
Join us on June 4 from 11:00 AM–2:00 PM at THE’I:TSLIYA Health and Community Centre on Skowkale First Nation for the launch of a Stó꞉lō-led, university-supported initiative supporting the revitalization of Halq’eméylem.
Prior to settler contact in what is now known as Canada, Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions were deeply rooted and widely practiced. The impacts of colonial violence and language suppression have disrupted the everyday use of Indigenous languages. Acknowledging settler positionality, this project supports Halq’eméylem through accessible, community-informed resources. The initiative highlights Halq’eméylem place names—many of which remain mispronounced or absent in public and educational spaces. These names carry histories, teachings, and relationships to the land, supporting cultural respect. The project will produce short educational videos featuring Stó꞉lō youth demonstrating correct pronunciation alongside Indigenous Sign Language (ISL), developed collaboratively with a Halq’eméylem teacher and ISL expert. A local Stó꞉lō artist has created outreach and wearable art designs, and the launch will bring together community members, youth, UFV, and partners, guided by Indigenous research methodologies and Stó꞉lō protocols. Note: this event will start with lunch.
