The Power of Negative Thinking: Alternatives to the B.S. of Positive Vibes and Relentless Optimism
This presentation will summarize and expand on content framed in two books that shook up the therapeutic beliefs developed by this typically-optimistic presenter over her 20 years as a Cognitive-Behavioral Psychologist (The Antidote: Happiness for People who Can’t Stand Positive Thinking by Oliver Burkeman; The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living by Russ Harris).
- To briefly wax philosophic on humanity’s search for meaning, “happiness”, connection, goal- achievement, clear mind, etc.
- To introduce examples (based on research and real-life clinical experience) of when positive thinking actually has an opposite effect.
- To explore alternative options to toxic positivity: embracing uncertainty, finding comfort in vulnerability and common humanity, practicing non-attachment, mindful/non-judgmental meditation, other Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based techniques and principles.
- To share recommendations for vetted resources and additional exploration of mindfulness, Stoicism, and other approaches to a contented life.
