UFV Book Club: Exploring Outgrowing Modernity

Date(s): Friday, February 13 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Location: Thinkerspace, G124

Gather and engage with others in the UFV community to reflect on what’s needed to navigate higher education in the complexity of society today. Particular attention will be given to application to our own areas of work at UFV. All are welcome.

Book: Outgrowing Modernity: Navigating Complexity, Complicity, and Collapse with Accountability and Compassion (Author: Vanessa Machado de Oliveira, Professor w/ UVIC, Faculty of Education)

This week’s discussion of Outgrowing Modernity will be on Section 3, “Whole-Shebang Relationality” (pp. 157-218). Comparing relationality with separability, this section engages with how modernity has and continues to shape social and educational directions, while also presenting alternative directions for “balance, resilience, and relational accountability” (p. 170).

While we’ll again have space to reflect on whatever resonated with you throughout the section, we’ll focus this week’s meeting on two general areas for conversation:

  1. Institutional: Which of the meta-relational dispositions are timely in this moment for UFV or higher education in BC? What would practicing these dispositions look like? (pp. 188-199)
  2. Professional/personal/relational: Which of the steps back/forward/aside give insight into your own journey, whether that’s professionally, personally, or relationally? (pp. 203-217)

Upcoming sessions:

  • March 13, 12-1pm: Reading and Discussion Section 4
  • April 10, 12-1pm: Conclusion: discuss next steps

All are welcome—bring your lunch, ideas, and curiosity!
