Critical Conversations About AI: AI and the Purpose of Education

AI is reshaping how we learn, teach, create, work, govern, and relate to one another. Universities are being asked to respond quickly to technological change and guide students through a rapidly shifting educational landscape that we can’t fully see yet. And while the pace seems urgent, there are deep, complex, and incredibly important questions we need to ask that are ethical philosophical, political, ecological, pedagogical, cultural, and deeply human.

Topic: AI and the Purpose of Education

  • What forms of intellectual, creative, and ethical development/learning depend on friction, effort, struggle, practice, uncertainty, and time?
  • What parts of learning should not be outsourced?
  • If AI removes friction from learning, what kinds of capacities might we lose if we over-value efficiency?
  • If AI is used by students as a learning tool, and everyone gets an ‘A,’ what happens to our grading?

These conversations are an opportunity to think across disciplines and perspectives; they are not about finding consensus.

Questions worth thinking about together: This series is designed around eight themes. Each month explores a critical theme through multiple lenses. We begin with tensions, contradictions, and questions that deserve sustained conversation. This is a monthly conversation series that takes place the first Wednesday of the month (except November which will take place on a Monday).
