A space for conversation, curiosity, and critical engagement

February’s focus: The Theme of Assessment and A.I.

  • When we say “AI-proof an assignment,” what are we really trying to protect?
  • What do we value through our assessments and where does AI feel like a threat to those values?
  • What does “meaningful feedback” look like in an AI-saturated environment, especially when students can use AI for feedback, strengthening their work etc.? What is our role now?
  • How has using AI helped with your approach to assessment (e.g., suggesting alternative assessment/assignment ideas, giving you feedback on your assessments/assignment descriptions, rubric creation)?
  • If you chose not to use AI for work related to assessment, why? What principles are behind that choice?
  • Where does assessment feel most unsustainable for you right now (e.g., time, emotional labour, volume)? Where might AI help you without compromising ethics or undermining your values?

This Community of Practice (CoP) brings together faculty and staff from across the institution who are thinking about artificial intelligence in their teaching, learning, research, and professional practice. Whether you are actively using AI tools, cautiously exploring their possibilities, or choosing not to use them for principled reasons, there is a place for your perspective here.

Rather than a debate to be won, this CoP is a space for ongoing dialogue about the complexities, tensions, and evolving landscape of AI. It offers a non-judgmental environment to share experiences, questions, concerns, and practices, and to learn from the diverse ways colleagues are engaging with or deliberately stepping back from these technologies.

Each gathering is lightly structured around an anchoring theme or guiding question (for example, ethical framing conversations with students, disciplinary perspectives on AI, or emergent issues arising in our classes), while leaving room for conversation to evolve in response to participants’ interests and needs.
